KARIEGA GAME RESERVE
Eastern CapeKariega Game Reserve in the Malaria free Eastern Cape and just over an hours drive from Port Elizabeth is a Big Five Game Reserve with all the species that historically naturally occurred in the region, having been reintroduced. This Game Park has very varied topography with the high open grass plains dropping through Albany thicket and forested biomes to the rivers below. The Kariega and Bushmans River both flow through the reserve and add to ones enjoyment when visiting. Boat cruises, canoe safaris, fishing and the added diversity of birdlife add value and especially for those staying at Kariega's River Lodge where easy access to the coast and to Kenton-on-sea makes for a plesant additional excursion.
Activities
Early morning and afternoon / evening guided game drives in open vehicles with experienced rangers, where you should enjoy close sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, hippo, giraffe, zebra and numerous antelope species. On one of the morning game drives, you could enjoy a cruise on the Kariega River on the "Kariega Queen". Enjoy the tranquility of nature, viewing the birdlife and possibly even game along the river. For those keen on hiking, guided bush walks with your Ranger are offered. This hike is on a section of Kariega without major predators but with more than 25 species of game and wonderful birdlife. Take a canoe and leisurely paddle down the Kariega River, a bit of exercise or just to spot our nesting Fish Eagles. This river is superb for fly fishermen. Enjoy the tranquil and picturesque surroundings whilst fishing the well stocked Kariega River. (Bring own fishing equipment).
For those just wanting to cool off , dive into the river and enjoy the delightiful river pools surrounded by forests. For the less adventurous, relax at communal pools at the Lodge, sun loungers and drinks on hand.

Wildlife
The Kariega Game Reserve is a sanctuary to a vast amount of various wild animals such as lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino, hippo, hyena, giraffe, zebra and a variety of antelope, as well as a host of bird species which presently include nesting Martial, Crowned and Fish Eagles.
Access
Kariega is situated 141 kms (approximately 80 minutes drive) from Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay) and a 10 minute drive from the Kenton-on-Sea beaches.

The Homestead is a private lodge which offers guests all the comforts, convenience and luxury of their own house. The Lodge has a dedicated Game Ranger and Chef, allowing guests the flexibility of planning their day according to their own specific needs. |

The beautiful campsite with rustic guest tents has been created in a remote, wild and pristine part of the reserve and can accommodate up to 10 guests. Guests leave from their lodge on a normal afternoon game drive before arriving on the banks of the beautiful Bushman's River, to enjoy a scenic and leisurely boat cruise into the un-spoilt Bushman's River valley area. |
